When you know you can't disobey God but doing so will get you killed, what do you do? Get creative. (Image credit: Pixabay)
“... she hid him for three months ... got a papyrus basket ... placed the child in it and put it among the reeds along the bank of the Nile.” (Exodus 2:1-3)

A mother’s love and her faith in her God saved not only her son’s life but the nation of Israel. Later her son would lead the people of Israel out of the bondage of Egypt and into the wilderness en route to the Promised Land.

In Hebrews 11, Moses’ parents were cited in the Hall of Faith when they hid him for three months. They saw that he was no ordinary child and they were not afraid of the king’s edict that male new-borns must perish. They defied it by faith even when their lives were at stake. Furthermore, the mother’s ingenuity and faith in God’s sovereignty led her to place her son in a basket by the Nile. God honoured her later by allowing her to take care of her own child through “child-minding” Moses, who was now the adopted child of Pharaoh's daughter.

Such is the powerful example of Jochebed who demonstrated her faith in God for her son’s life. Her godly child-raising no doubt contributed to Moses’ taking a stand for the Jews and responding to God’s call.

Women who mind children, even if not their own, exercise much influence over these young lives. Hence the countless examples of believers today who can trace their spiritual influences to those of Sunday School Teachers and other such mentors in their lives.

On a personal note, I recall two godly ladies who introduced me to Sunday School. It laid the foundation for my personal acknowledgement of Christ as Saviour later in life. Women who exercise faith on behalf of young ones will have the deep satisfaction of these same ones exercising their own faith in the Lord later on! They may not necessarily see the immediate fruits of their labour, but may get to savour it in time when each child matures into a godly individual.
